Reinventing Ardeer // Ardeer Peninsular, North Ayrshire

With loss of its industry, There’s a rising complication of unemployment and deprivation on-going crisis along the areas in Firth of Clyde. These areas which played key roles in Glasgow and Scotland industrial development in the past, are now reconsidering its position in this modern world- wondering in which direction it will head.

The project aims to revive ‘Ardeer’ to once again be at the forefront of its industry with now shifting from a private manufacturers town towards sustainable energy development and greening the economy. To propose the town as a window of the past toward the future, the masterplan explores human boundaries while remaining an important ecological reservation site while retaining historical traces of previous global scale industry. The project then began with Master Planning proposing to attract green and blue industry to the site creating scientific development and educational opportunities to both regional and global networks. Then, extending towards the residential and their facilities not only for researchers and workers but inviting other communities. The scheme will illustrate future adaptation towards living with nature creating less than 2 mins to nature from town.

The narrative is building from potential of the found site and incorporating the plan of innovative centre network and facilities requirements. The focus areas from the wider masterplan is Marine Energy Research Centre located on the south west part of the Ardeer peninsula and the edge of stevenston town adjacent to the current industrial area. The programme will scoping on prototype testing facilities, research workspace and laboratory while partly visible to visitor access to learn more about marine energy development.
