The Pier // Aberdeen

A proposed seaweed cultivation facility and farm, material research lab and seaweed bathhouse in Aberdeen. The project set out to create new sustainable employment opportunities in the North East of Scotland as an alternative to the oil and gas industry. Seaweed - Naturally sequesters carbon, filters pollution within seawater and presents huge potential as a green industry due to its favourable characteristics for construction materials and use in the food industry. The various facilities within the project harness the different characteristics of seaweed and provide a variety of employment sectors. To reflect this variety, the facilities are constructed using recycled materials from decommissioned oil rigs as they become redundant and referencing the tradition of hutting in Scotland.
